Common questions about our service
Here we answer some of the most common questions about Gemval's services and content.
Do you sell or purchase gems?
No, we don't. Our goal is to provide you with a modern, comprehensive and easy to use online tool to estimate the value of your gem. We are proud to retain our professional integrity by not buying or selling gems. To find a reliable gem supplier you should check relevant web resources. We recommend some on our resources page.
Do you provide any appraisal certificates?
To comply with international gemological practices, official appraisals must be done offline by a certified gemologist through direct manual examination. The estimated value obtained on Gemval.com cannot be used as a reference for any legal or official purposes. Gemval provides a reliable interactive tool for gems valuation, but in the final analysis, the appraisal is made by you.
Which market segments do you analyze?
Please be aware that the valuation made by Gemval corresponds to values set by web traders rather than the retail prices found in traditional jewelry markets. In some cases, the difference between the two is considerable. Our database has, since April 2004, included statistical data from 130 specialized web sites.
How often do you update your statistical data?
We update our data on a monthly basis. In order to track changes in prices for most varieties of stones, our professionals continually monitor markets and adjust model parameters. Such changes are in most cases insignificant, when viewed over a short time period.
I'm not sure about the type of my gem. Can I identify it here?
Unfortunately not. We don't provide identification reports. The minimum criterion for using Gemval's model is knowledge of your gem's variety and exact weight.
What is the model accuracy?
For the most part, acceptable weight interval for a gem is from 0.3 - 0.5 ct. to tens of cts. This means that you can rely on the valuation if your gem falls within the specified weight range. You may of course appraise heavier stones, but be aware, such pieces are very rare and we consequently have little statistical data on them. You would do better by taking your gem to a specialist offline.
